Thanks to
Áine Phelan for drawing my attention to this
memorial TRAMORE PROMENADE,
WATERFORD Helicopter Accident Victims The
inscription below tells it all -- The four-man military crew of a rescue
helicopter, having saved five lives, themselves killed trying to return to
base.
 |
"This memorial was commissioned by the people of
the South East in memory of the crew of the Irish Air Corps helicopter who died
tragically in the sand dunes of Tramore Head on the 2nd of July 1999. Having
successfully assisted in the rescue of five people in heavy fog off the
Waterford coast, their attempts to land their helicopter at Waterford airport
were thwarted by that same fog. While the final minutes of Rescue 111's flight
will always be a mystery, in fulfilling their unit motto "Go Mairidis Beo"
(That others may live) they paid the ultimate price. Ar dheis Dé go
raibh a n-anamacha. Unveiled by Mary McAlese, President of Ireland on the
4th of September 2000 Sergant Patrick Mooney, Stamullen, Co. Meath
