Sophie Toscan du Plantier was a film-maker, very successful
and well-known in her native France. She had a holiday home near Schull, Co.
Cork and it was there, at the gateway to the lane leading to her house, that
she was battered to death. On 23 December 1996, the body of Sophie Toscan du
Plantier was discovered outside her remote holiday cottage near Schull in West
Cork. The attack had been savage and merciless. The murder caused shock waves
in her native France and in the quiet Cork countryside that she had chosen as
her retreat from the high-flying lifestyle of the film business in which she
and her husband mixed. Six years later, and despite an extensive investigation,
the killer of Sophie is still at large. The file remains open.
The photo
on the right above shows the simple celtic cross with the word 'Sophie' which
was placed by her parents at the spot where she was found murdered, the
location can be discerned just beyond the large white stone inside the gate in
the photo.
