Portlaoise, Co. Laois Natural death of
former sports star This is another memorial which was featured
for a long time mistakenly on the main section of the site. The real
circumstances were very kindly sent to me by the Faughs Club after I had made
inquiry of the Secretary: Danny McCormack collapsed and died as he was
leaving a GAA match , at which he had been a spectator, in Portlaoise Pitch
(across the road from where the memorial is located). He was identified by his
GAA membership card which he had in his possession.
At the outskirts of the town as you approach it
from the Roundabout on the Cork-Dublin road. The inscription is entirely in
Irish.
Leacht Cuimhneacháin Seo é
an ball 'na bhfuair Domhnall Mac Cormac bás ar an 17adh

agus a co-iománaithe i gCumann Fág a Bhealach a thóg
an leacht seo. (Sic) Seo thuas
díreach mar atá an litriú agus an ghramadach ar an leacht,
cé nach mar sin a bheadh síad inniu, sílim.

*For those interested in Gaelic games, Dublin reached the
All-Ireland Senior Hurling Final in both years mentioned without winning either
year:
1902: after drawing 1-7 with Cork they failed
to find form in the replay, losing by 2-6 to
0-1.
1906: Dublin were beaten 3-16 to 3-8 by
Tipperary
