MASSEYTOWN, Macroom,
Co. Cork The 'Bowlplaying' here referred to is the sport of
'Road Bowling' which consists in individual competitors throwing a 28-ounce
solid iron ball, about the size of a tennis ball, along minor public roads
(like the one in the photo below). A common version is the 'Score' in which the
winner is the person who covers the greatest distance with twenty throws of the
'bowl' or ball. The sport is particularly popular in counties Armagh and
Cork.
