Man
critical after three killed in crash

A
37-year-old man was in critical condition last night following a car crash that
claimed three lives. The three male victims from a Co Laois village were
returning from a birthday party when the accident occured. The three died at
Oakvale on the Carlow to Stradbally Road at 1am yesterday after their blue
Subaru Impreza crashed through a wall, mounted a ditch and skidded for more
than 200 feet before somersaulting and landing on its roof. They had attended
the party earlier in the day at Ballylinan, seven miles from their home village
of Stradbally. Gardaí named the victims as Declan Hewitt, 27, Paul
Riordan, 35, and 21-year-old Jonathan Maher. Niall Sheehy, who is in his late
30 and also lives in Stradbally, received head injuries and was taken to
Beaumont Hospital in Dublin after being cut from the vehicle. His condition was
last night described as critical.
