By Vivion Kilfeather

A 37-year-old man was in critical condition last night following a car crash that claimed three lives. The three male victims from a Co Laois village were returning from a birthday party when the accident occured. The three died at Oakvale on the Carlow to Stradbally Road at 1am yesterday after their blue Subaru Impreza crashed through a wall, mounted a ditch and skidded for more than 200 feet before somersaulting and landing on its roof. They had attended the party earlier in the day at Ballylinan, seven miles from their home village of Stradbally. Gardaí named the victims as Declan Hewitt, 27, Paul Riordan, 35, and 21-year-old Jonathan Maher. Niall Sheehy, who is in his late 30 and also lives in Stradbally, received head injuries and was taken to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin after being cut from the vehicle. His condition was last night described as critical.
