A PROMINENT member of the Cork
hurling team is recovering in hospital from injuries he received in a crash
which claimed the life of a 25-year-old man.Pat Mulcahy was returning home from
attending the funeral of an Antrim hurler when the car he was driving was
involved in a collision with another vehicle, five miles north of Cork on the
main Mallow Road. Five units of Cork City Fire Brigade attended the scene of
the crash at Rathduff, which took place shortly before 11pm last Sunday. The
25-year-old man died at the scene. Gardaí said they wouldn't name him
until his relatives had been informed. However, he was named locally as Liam
Cahill, a farmer from Carrignavar, Co Cork. Mr Mulcahy had been returning from
the funeral of Antrim hurler Frankie McMullen, who dropped dead suddenly last
week. The father-of-two had played for Dunloy Cuchulains, which lost to
Mulcahy's club, Newtownshandrum, in the All-Ireland Club final, which had taken
place in Croke Park on St Patrick's Day. Mr Mulcahy was taken to Cork
University Hospital, suffering from a broken wrist. He is said to be in a
comfortable condition. Only two cars were involved in the accident, which
happened on a notoriously dangerous stretch of road.
