Kilmeaden man killed in car
crash
A TWENTY-THREE-YEAR-OLD Kilmeaden man tragically lost his life
when the Golf car in which he was a back-seat passenger was involved in a
collision with a rigid truck on the main Waterford/Cork road yesterday morning
(Tuesday).
The dead man, who has been named as Derek Ryan, from
Gortaclode, Kilmeaden, was an employee of Suir Electric and he was on his way
to work in Cork with two colleagues when the accident occurred on a straight
stretch of road at Garrylish, Leamybrien, at approximately 6.30 a.m.
Supt. Jerry Lynch, of Tramore Garda Station, said that immediately
before the fatal crash another Golf car, also carrying Suir Electric employees,
went onto the hard shoulder of the road and got caught up in loose gravel.
It veered across to the opposite side of the road and ended up on an
embankment. The An Post SDS delivery truck, which was following behind, slowed
down or was in the process of stopping when it was struck from behind by the
second Golf.
A unit of the fire brigade from Kilmacthomas attended the
scene and the young man who tragically lost his life and at least one other
person, were cut from the wreckage.
The scene was also attended by at
least three ambulances. Mr. Ryan was removed to Waterford Regional Hospital
where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Also removed to Waterford
Regional Hospital were the driver of the truck, the driver of the Golf and the
front seat passenger who is understood to have sustained serious but not life
threatening injuries.
Mr. Ryan was a popular member of the local
community and was a talented hurler having played at under age and senior level
with Ballyduff Lower. He was also a former member of the Waterford minor panel.
One of a large family, he was educated at Ballyduff National School and
St. Declans Community College, Kilmacthomas.
