Tragedy struck in the Maam Valley in Connemara when a young showjumper died in a horrific car accident.

Michael Joyce, 23, from Claremorris, Co Mayo was killed when a falling tree crashed on to his car.

His English girlfriend, who was in the passenger seat of the car, had a miracle escape. She was treated for just minor injuries and shock after the accident.

She was being comforted by her boyfriend's devastated family last night. The couple were due to get engaged on St Stephen's Day.
