Gales, snow storms and icy roads take toll in most areas
By Fergus Black
WINTER loosened its icy grip after gales, driving snow and ice left roads in a treacherous condition across many parts of the country.
The spell of bad weather eased yesterday, and tomorrow will see a return to mild and windy conditions, with some rain or drizzle.
Parts of the northwest bore the brunt of the bad weather, with Donegal, Mayo, Sligo, Cavan and Roscommon hardest hit.
In the south-east a woman was killed in a road accident yesterday morning when driving conditions were said to be dangerous. The collision, between a 4x4 and car on the N25 Kilmacthomas road in Co Waterford, occurred at around 8am.
The 45-year-old woman was named as Helen Murphy of Carrigeen, Kill, Co Waterford.
