Mother and
child die in road crash
By Eddie Cassidy
A HORRIFIC head-on
crash claimed the lives of a mother and child yesterday afternoon as the road
carnage toll topped 104, marginally higher than last year. The three-year-old
girl and mother, in her early 30's, who died in the Co Kerry crash are believed
to be from Cork city. The names were being withheld last night until all family
members were contacted. Gardai said the tragedy at Brewsterfield, about five
miles from Killarney on the main Cork route, was the first fatal accident since
the completion of major improvements several years ago on a new stretch of the
N25 national primary road. A Land Cruiser and a black Ford Fiesta collided on a
straight stretch of road around 4.30pm. Both occupants of the Fiesta died at
the scene, while the Land Cruiser's driver was removed to Tralee General
Hospital, Emergency services said both vehicles overturned. The bodies were
recovered from the wreckage by Killarney fire brigade personnel and brought to
Tralee General Hospital for a post mortem examination to be carried out today.
