John Quinlan from Ballyrickard was killed
when his bicycle was involved in a collision with a car at Farran Cross just
outside Macroom shortly after 8pm on Monday night. Mr Quinlan is the third
person to die at the cross in five years and residents claim the NRA has not
taken enough action to make the road safe.
Mr Quinlan, a 30-year-old
accountant, had been living at The Close, Coolroe Meadows in Ballincollig for
several years while working with a computer firm in Cork City. He was cycling
from Macroom in the direction of Cork City when he was struck by a car
travelling in the same direction. The tragic crash accident occurred close to
roadworks at the notorious accident blackspot. Mr Quinlan was pronounced dead
at the scene and his remains were taken to Cork University Hospital. A
spokesman for Macroom Gardaí described the tragedy as a freak accident.
Macroom gardaí have begun an investigation into the incident and
they have interviewed both occupants of the car involved in the accident. A
file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.
John
Quinlan is survived by parents Tommy and Aine, who live in Ballyrickard, his
two sisters Maura and Noreen and brother Thomas. A family friend said the
Quinlan family were devastated by their loss. They are being comforted by
relatives and friends at the family home. The removal service was to take place
from Gleasures Funeral home in Tralee this Thursday at 6 pm before
requiem mass in St Johns at 11.15am on Friday. Mr Quinlan will be buried
at Rath cemetery.
