At Ballyhooly in north Cork, a
heartbroken man was being comforted after the death of his wife of five months.
She was struck by a car as she walked home in the early hours of yesterday
morning. Dan O'Driscoll's 26-year-old wife Emma, originally from Wales, was a
health worker at St Patrick's Hospital in Fermoy.
It was the second
tragedy to hit Mr O'Driscoll, who recently lost his brother Patsy, 44, to
cancer. Local curate Fr Dan McCarthy said Emma's death had cast a shadow over
the small village. "It is a terrible tragedy. The thoughts of all the people of
the parish are with Dan and his family, who are very popular and
well-respected," Fr McCarthy said. Gardaí in Fermoy have appealed for
witnesses to contact them.
