KILMORE CROSSES
As somebody who keeps a sharp eye out for roadside crosses wherever I go, imagine my surprise when I drove into Kilmore village, Co Wexford, for the first time and viewed the scene as photographed on the right.
From the excellent Kilmore Parish Website we learn that these crosses are the continuation of a custom dating back to the 1100s. As the photos below show, there is another white-thorn tree at the opposite end of the village simililarly festooned with crosses. On the occasion of every funeral to the local cemetery, a cross is placed under the tree in memory of the deceased. "Those attending the funeral pause in respectful silence as the cross is placed with the others. This was formerly done by one of the mourners, but is now done by the undertaker (Funeral Director), who automatically brings two crosses for all funerals in Kilmore, the other being for the grave." |
